James Milton SHELTON (Son of Henry and Matilda SHELTON) was born about 1837 in Georgia.6   He married Rachel Elizabeth FORTNER 22JAN1860 in Lumpkin County, Georgia.9  Click Here for James & Rachel's Marriage LicenseIn the various Census Records of Lumpkin County (1850, 1860, 1870) James is listed as a Farm Laborer.  According to the Census Records neither he nor his wife could read or write, however, he signed the land record with his siblings as J.M. SHELTON.5

James Milton SHELTON served in the C.S.A. during the Civil War.  He was a Private in the 52nd Regiment of the Georgia Infantry, Company D (Boyd's Guards). Click Here for copies of his Pay Records.  You will notice that he was Absent Without Leave since 07 OCT 1863.  He was captured at Vicksburg, MS 04JUL1863.  Apparently about 1/2 of the "Boyd's Guard" went back home to never fight again.  The other 1/2 returned to their Regiment.  James Milton went home.  All of these soldiers had to sign a declaration that they would never fight again.  Click Here to see the Declaration that James Milton signed.

Rachel    Rachel Elizabeth FORTNER was born 02DEC1844.3   According to our family tradition, Rachel was of Scottish descent.

According to some branches of the FORTNER family, the family was German.  In some Census Records, the surname is spelled
FAULKNER.  Rachel had a brother Harrison FORTNER.3  I have not been able to verify this brother in Census Records, but I have
been able to verify a brother named Columbus FORTNER.12  Her father was Jesse Harrison FORTNER.12, 13   b.10JUN1817
Pleasant Grove, Pickens County, South Carolina. 11  He married Dorothy.  According to our family tradition, this Dorothy is
supposed to be Dorothy HAND.  And her father is supposed to be Jonathan HAND.  Jonathan HAND is supposed to have fought at
the Battle of King’s Mountain during the Revolutionary War.  The records of those that fought at this battle are sketchy at best and I have
never found him listed there.  What we do know is that Jesse Harrison FORTNER’s father was Timothy FORTNER b.ca.1785  in
North Carolina. 11  He married Millac COLLINS about 1806 in Patten Field, Pickens County, South Carolina.11 Jesse Harrison
FORTNER died after 1850 at Pleasant Grove, Pickens County, South Carolina.  The family moved to Lumpkin County during the
Georgia Gold Rush sometime after 1820. Eventually, Timothy FORTNER and his sons, James Timothy FORTNER and Jackson T.
FORTNER returned to South Carolina.  Milac COLLINS died in Georgia and is said to be buried at the Bethel Methodist
Campground Cemetery near Dawsonville, Dawson County, Georgia.  Milac COLLINS is the daughter of Nathaniel COLLINS. 11

It is thought that Millac was born 07MAR1781 in Ireland? 11  The children of James Milton SHELTON and Rachel Elizabeth FORTNER
            are:
